ENGLISH SECTOR

ENGLISH

The goal of this program is to promote the reading and creation of a wide variety of texts: written, spoken and media. Our enriched English Language Arts program develops and hones essential language and communication skills, which serve our students well when they enrol in post-secondary education and embark on their chosen career paths.

Students explore a wide range of themes in both classic and modern literature. They are encouraged to respond to literature in a variety of ways, including personal responses, creative projects (oral and written) and both formal and informal essays.

Français langue de base (FRE)

The Français langue de base program encourages students, through active participation in learning and evaluation situations in class, to develop and apply competencies in reading, writing and oral communication. They acquire knowledge and fine-tune strategies through activities linked to learning tools such as the lexicon, grammar, conjugation, lexical spelling, syntax and punctuation. The course also helps raise students’ awareness of the francophone culture and the world in which they live. At this level, students are expected to attain a functional level of spoken and written French.

Français enrichi (FLS)

The Français enrichi program caters to those students whose French language competencies are good. Students follow an accelerated second language program that allows them to integrate elements of oral and written language into situations involving everyday interactions. Through text production or comprehension, they also learn grammar concepts, as they apply to texts as a whole and to individual sentences, linguistic strategies or cultural reference points.

Français enrichi avancé (FLP)

The Français enrichi avancé program caters to those students whose French language competencies closely mirror bilingualism. Students follow an accelerated second language program that allows them to integrate elements of oral and written language into situations involving everyday interactions. Through text production or comprehension, they also learn grammar concepts, as they apply to texts as a whole and to individual sentences, linguistic strategies or cultural reference points.

At this level, students are expected to go beyond the traditional school boundaries and function in French in the outside world where they can apply and continue to develop their language competencies.

Français langue d'enseignement (FLE)

The Français langue d'enseignement program offers students various stimulating in-class learning and evaluation situations that enable them to develop and apply competencies in reading, oral and written communication and spontaneous interactions in French. The course also helps them build knowledge of the francophone culture through discovery of various contemporary and literary works, cultural experiences and recognition of the role the culture plays in their own lives. Students encounter the richness of words and books and learn to make links between French and other subjects, as well as between school and the world in which they live. At this level, students are expected to be proficient in reading, writing and oral communication.

Please note that the following groups will also receive all their courses in French:

  • Secondary 1 FLP and FLE Advisory and Technology groups.
  • Secondary 2 FLP and FLE Ethics and Religious Culture groups.
  • Secondary 1 to 5 Physical Education groups.
  • Secondary 1 FLP and FLE Geography groups.
  • Secondary 2 FLP and FLE History groups.
  • Secondary 1 to 5 Music groups.
  • Secondary 1 and 2 Art groups.

FRENCH SECTOR

OBJECTIF FRANÇAIS

Unique to Villa Maria’s French sector, the “Objectif français” program seeks to develop the student’s self-sufficiency and foster a quest for personal excellence, in keeping with the Ministry’s program.

“Objectif français” evens the playing field for allophone students, students new to Québec and students experiencing difficulties with French. Students are ranked in this program in Secondary 1 and remain in it until Secondary 5, ensuring that they acquire the tools needed to pass the Ministry of Education’s Secondary 2 and 5 exams as well as other exams throughout their academic journey.

The climate, which the teachers establish in class, promotes an active approach to the students’ work through teamwork, collaborative writing and reading, as well as meaningful projects. This innovative program seeks to foster their mastery of written and spoken French, increase their pleasure in reading, writing and communicating verbally, and develop a positive attitude with regards to the French language and francophone culture.

FRENCH REGULAR

The French Regular course allows students to develop and apply competencies in reading, writing and oral communication through active participation in diversified and stimulating in-class learning and evaluation situations.

The course also helps them build knowledge of the francophone culture through discovery of various contemporary and literary works, diverse cultural experiences, and recognition of the role francophone literature and culture plays in their own lives. Students learn to make links between French and other subjects, as well as between school and the world in which they live.

FRENCH ENRICHED

This program gives students the valuable opportunity to explore learning situations at a faster pace while helping them develop the same competencies as in French Regular. They have access to a wider reading and writing program and are required to create activities that go beyond the scope of the Ministère’s program.

ENGLISH SECOND LANGUAGE REGULAR

The English Second Language Regular program is for students who are ready to build on the progress made in the elementary level regular program. The goal is to develop essential knowledge in grammar, literature and writing.

ENGLISH SECOND LANGUAGE ENRICHED
